FREEMAN
J. LEWIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Major to Qualify: Pre-veterinary Medicine
Other Criteria: The awards are given annually to registered pre-veterinary medicine
students. Students are awarded based on academic performance, involvement in
animal-related activities, and demonstrated interest in the veterinary medical
profession. The recipients are selected by the Scholarship Committee of the
Veterinary Science Department.
The Freeman J. Lewis Memorial Scholarship was provided through a generous bequest left by Lucile Tinsley of Rapid City in 1989. The scholarship is named for Mrs. Tinsley's father, Freeman Lewis, who died in 1919. Mrs. Tinsley's fondness for animals and her desire to help her home state prompted her to provide this scholarship.
J. MICHAEL ROBBIE SCHOLARSHIP
Major to Qualify: Pre-veterinary Medicine
Other Criteria: The award is given annually to students majoring in pre-veterinary
medicine, with academic achievement, leadership potential, and financial need.
Preference shall be given to students in greatest need of financial assistance.
The recipients are selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Veterinary Science
Department
J. Michael Robbie is a native of Minneapolis, MN. He earned his undergraduate degree from Notre Dame University in Mechanical Engineering and went on to earn his graduate degree from the University of South Dakota in Law. In 1967 he moved to Florida when his family purchased the Miami Dolphins football team.
Upperclass Scholarships

HARRY HALVERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Major to Qualify: Pre-veterinary Medicine
Other Criteria: The award is given annually to a sophomore student enrolled
in pre-veterinary medicine. The recipient is selected by the Scholarship Committee
of the Veterinary Science Department.
The Dr. Harry Halverson Memorial Scholarship was established in 1973 by Edna Halverson in memory of her husband, Harry.
Dr. Halverson was born in 1896 at Brookings, South Dakota. He served with the American Expeditionary Forces in England and France during World War I. In 1920 he graduated from SDSU and then taught in high schools for a number of years. In the 1930's he decided to begin a career in veterinary medicine and obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1936.
Dr. Halverson and his wife, Edna, moved to Flandreau, South Dakota, where he was engaged in the veterinary field for almost 40 years. He was well-known in the area and the state for his work and involvement in local and statewide affairs.
RICHARD AND CAROL DIERKS SCHOLARSHIP
Major to Qualify: Pre-veterinary Medicine
Other Criteria: The award is given annually to a third or fourth year student
majoring in pre-veterinary medicine, who has a strong possibility of acceptance
into the professional DVM program. Financial need will also be a consideration.
The recipient is selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Veterinary Science
Department.
