Direct PCR Tritrichomonas Testing at SDSU ADRDL

The SDSU ADRDL is now accepting smegma samples from bulls for direct PCR testing  for Tritrichomonas fetus.  South Dakota, among other states, has recently approved the use of a single PCR test (to be performed on smegma submitted in saline) rather than the currently accepted practice of requiring 3 negative cultures before a bull can be transported across state lines, sold, or leased.

Smegma sample collection for this direct PCR test is identical to that of the culture procedure, except that smegma samples should be placed in 5 ml of physiologic saline, rather than the culture pouches as in the past.  (Demonstration of smegma sampling technique can be found by clicking here).  Although transport requirements for these direct PCR samples are less particular than those for the culture pouches, care should be taken to avoid extremes of freezing and excessive heat during transport.

Cost for the PCR test is $25.  Direct tritrichomonas PCR testing is performed on Mondays.  If results are needed in between regular testing days, a $10 stat charge per sample will be added.  Please contact the SDSU ADRDL at 605-688-5171 if you have questions.
