Note:  Exceptional animals requiring specialized training for animal care or substantial infectious disease risk to ARW staff will be entirely the responsibility of the investigator (who must be qualified and approved by ARW administration and the IACUC to provide that care) and per diem will be adjusted accordingly, but housing charges will remain the same.

Facility charges

All animal-housing rooms will carry a monthly use fee except designated common small animal housing rooms as explained below.

One room each shall be designated for common housing of rats, mice and rabbits.  You may house your animals of appropriate species in those rooms without additional housing charges if: 1) your animals come SPF and remain so throughout their stay; 2) receive no live organisms; 3) require only routine care.  You may not house your animals in the common room if they, or the experimental design imposes any endangerment or stress to other animals or investigators.  Experiments whose end point includes the probability of death or disability are excluded from the common rooms, as are experiments calculated to cause tumors and other obvious disfigurement to the animals.  Ascites production and vaccination animals are not excluded if the animals are removed well before they exhibit signs of stress.

Monthly room charges for animal housing:

In addition to per diem charges as given above, charges will be levied for use of animal care rooms.  These charges are levied to offset costs of labor for cleaning rooms and the building, and providing a modest fund for purchase and replacement of essential equipment.  Charges will be prorated based on actual time of occupancy, with the minimal charge being that equal to 10 days stay.

There will be no charge for use of examination room, necropsy, or infectious disease lab.  However, a clean-up fee will be assessed if the facility is not thoroughly cleaned up by the user.  The relatively modest fee for the surgery suite assumes that the investigator will clean up after him/herself.  Disinfection of the room will be the responsibility of the building staff.
